One of the conclusions that I drew from the excessive confuse the customer attitude that these tanning salons were practicing was that the tanning salon business is in all reality quite competitive and quite cut throat. Every tanning salon knows what the prices charged by the competition is and so the owners know the other establishments’ prices.
And you cannot have too many tanning salons in any area because not all people go to tanning salons and so the market cannot get saturated. Add to this the pain created by discount retailers selling home versions of tanning beds and you end up losing another chunk of customer base.
If you have employees at your tanning salon, you want to make sure that they do not upset any customer for any reason because I found that some of these customers may start writing bad reviews of a specific establishment and post them on the internet for that review to stay on that specific site for God knows how many years into the future.
This is also the reason I find that a good many of them simply went out of business or were slowly bleeding to death. You might say that competition exists in all businesses but then again some are more ferocious than others and the business of tanning salons is for sure quite a competitive environment where one needs to watch quality of service, pricing as well as customer convenience and complete satisfaction.
All this discovery made me somewhat scared but it is better to know what you will be getting into rather than jumping into the pool totally blind. Nevertheless I planned to march on.
